BUSINESS OVERVIEW "I had always been a collector of unusual jewelry, but my jewelry store started by accident," confessed Suhyda, owner of Carrazza Jewelers since 1983." AN Eccentric COLLECTIO N Thirty years ago, if you had asked Ed Suhyda what he wanted to do with his life, he would've told you that he wanted to open a pizza parlor. In fact, it was practically in the works, when happenstance landed him instead with a small shop in Ft. Lauderdale's famous Bahia Mar Hotel. "I had always been a collector of unusual jewelry, but my jewelry store started by accident," confessed Suhyda, owner of Carrazza Jewelers since 1983. As a child in Pennsylvania, Suhyda's father would bring him to old barn auctions, where he was instilled with an affinity for the unusual. "He would buy things like a sad- dle, but we didn't have a horse. Or an old piano, that no one in my house could play." It was this collector's mentality that eventually inspired his one-of-a-kind showroom. Carrazza Jewelers houses a truly captivating collection of jewelry, timepieces and pendants, as well as the Xcentrics gallery—a place for exotic collectibles and extensively restored antiques. What sets Carrazza apart from most showrooms of its kind is the genuine pride and passion that Suhyda brings to his collection. With an arsenal of 22 different restora¬ tion professionals, he absolutely delivers the top tier of quality for jewelry and collectibles alike. "The beauty is in the restoration, all done by hand. Some collectors want that old beat up look," he remarked dis- missively. "Others want it refurbished—like a piece of art." After nearly 30 years in business, Suhyda knows much about the restoration process, and had a bit of wisdom to share with anyone with a budding interest in antiques. "Materials that are perishable, like wood for instance, are rarer finds," he explained, mentioning his completely re¬ : Oval-shaped 8.06 carat museum-quality Mandarin stored all-wood early 20th century cash register that is ' Garnet surrounded by 22 natural yellow diamonds just one of 150 stunning items in his gallery.
