Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science, designed by internationally recognized Grimshaw Architects, is quickly rising in downtown Miami’s Museum Park along Biscayne Bay. When complete, it will feature a lushly landscaped indoor and outdoor “living core” of terrestrial and aquatic spaces, a full dome planetarium, interactive exhibits, innovative technology, two additional wings of exhibition space, a green roof with hydroponics and the Knight Learning Center. The museum will open in 2015, but it already has hundreds of business, civic, philanthropic and young professional leaders offering their support. Nearly 1,000 of them gathered for the museum’s 11th Annual Galaxy Gala and Big Bang on March 9 at the JW Marriott Marquis. “With our new home in Museum Park now going vertical, this year’s Galaxy Gala was an opportunity for individual and corporate supporters to come together for a spectacular evening of entertainment, fine dining and dancing — all in support of what will be among the world’s most innovative and educational museums,” said Gala Co-Chair Nancy Batchelor. Hosted by WPLG Channel 10 reporter Christina Boomer Vazquez, the program included several award presentations honoring key supporters of the event and the museum. Acknowledgement gifts were presented to The Batchelor Foundation, the Gala’s Honorary Chair; Trish and Dan Bell, Philanthropic Chairs; and Nancy and Jonathan Batchelor and Nicole and Edgar Lozano, Gala Co-Chairs. Commemorative Hard Hats Photos Courtesy of Meg Pukel were presented to Patricia and Phillip Frost, naming donors. The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science Award was given to supporters Ruth and Jack Admire. The Vanguard Award was given to corporate partner Wells Fargo. Major sponsors included Suffolk Construction, Gold Sponsors for the second year in a row; Azamara Club Cruises, Lincoln, Johnson Controls, Neiman Marcus, Coral Gables and Bacardi USA. Among gala attendees were Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, City of Miami Mayor Tomás Regalado, Miami- Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvahlo, Miami-Dade County School Board Member Raquel Regalado, University of Miami President Donna Shalala and Miami-Dade College President Eduardo Padron. The “Big Bang” party, hosted by the museum’s Young Patrons group, was held immediately following the Galaxy Gala under the leadership of Co-Chairs Izzy Havenick and Alexis Rivera. Sponsored by Magic City Casino and the Downtown Development Authority, the party transformed into a nightlife-inspired event with DJs Mark Leventhal and Lauren Reskin, special performances by musical group Hola Hi, an open cocktail bar sponsored by Bacardi and desserts from Misha’s Cupcakes and Donut Divas.
