BEAUTY FITNESS & HEALTH RUN,SPIN,PLIÉ to a better body While health and longevity tend to be the idealistic reasons why people want to live an active lifestyle, swimsuit season, is often the main motivator for getting in shape. Thanks to a new crop of boutique–style fitness studios that focus on one discipline as opposed to full-service gym that offers many; we explore a few different ways to sweat this summer. RUN: High-intensity interval treadmill workouts are effective at burning fat in a short period of time, says Derek DeGrazio, co-owner and head instructor of Barry’s Bootcamp Miami Beach. “Our interval training maximizes fat burn while preserving lean muscle,” he notes. The workouts at Barry’s Bootcamp and other treadmill-focused studios challenge runners via sprints and inclines on treadmills for part of the class, while the other part of the class combines strength training with weights and resistance bands. SPIN: Take a seat, but don't get too comfortable, as indoor cycling is not a leisure activity. “Indoor cycling is an excellent way to lean out for summer or any season. It’s safe, scorches calories quickly and it is truly effective,” says Flywheel master instructor Aleah Stander. It is not just a leg workout at Flywheel. “The high-energy classes include intervals, climbs and descents to deliver a full-body workout, targeting glutes, quads, hamstrings and, of course, the heart, giving the rider an intense cardio and fat-burning workout,” Stander explains. PLIÉ: Pliés yes, tutus no. Barre-based workouts combine balletinspired moves with a bit of yoga and Pilates to sculpt your body like a ballerina’s. “You can achieve a stronger, sleeker physique at the barre thanks to low-impact yet challenging isometric movements,” says Barre Motion founder Julie Jacko. “Barre Motion classes are based on scientific principles, and sequences are carefully designed to safely push and stretch muscles in a way that maximizes caloric burn while dramatically improving flexibility within a short period of time.” For more information and class schedules, visit www. barrysbootcamp.com, www.flywheelsports.com and www. barremotionmiami.com. 82 july/august 2014 southfloridaluxuryguide.com
