Y E E L E N G A L L E R Y Occupying more than 10,000 square feet of converted industrial space in Miami’s storied Little Haiti Neighborhood, Yeelen Gallery has been on a mission to foster relationships that will impact the local community and reshape the lens through which contemporary art is viewed in the mainstream. “Love, Strength, and Soul,” old and new works by Brooklyn-based artist Tim Okamura, is very much an extension of Yeelen’s philosophy in the artist’s personal quest to paint the protagonists in his very own New York community. Employing a traditional style interwoven with contemporary elements, Okamura pays homage to the street art components of his surroundings and the subjects’ psychology. Okamura elaborates, “The connection I feel with people, the ability to tap into a sense of empathy, is, I think, the trait that has guided the work more than anything else.” Yeelen Gallery 294 NW 54th Street, Little Haiti yeelenart.com B U T T E R G A L L E R Y One of a handful of galleries credited with making Wynwood Art District what it is today, Butter Gallery has since relocated to new frontiers in what is increasingly known as West Wynwood. Francisco de la Torre is the innovatorcum gallerist behind this migration, which included revamping the Gesamtkunstwerk building (translated as ‘a complete body of work’) to create affordable and dynamic opportunities for star creatives such as Spinello Projects, Wynwood Radio and his very own Butter Gallery. “Departure” is a series of new work by Miami-based artist Yuri Tuma that showcases a literal departure from the intricate, ornate mosaics of his earlier collections toward materiality, motion and color. Reflecting the delicately geometric pieces of Victor Vasarely and the Minimalist Op Art Movement, the large-scale chromatic works of “Departure” take their origins — cell-phone-photographed items, spaces and colors — to their most simplified conclusion: clean shapes, simple lines and an ephemeral quality subject to the changes of light and mood. “The new space represents an even clearer direction for Butter, and Yuri’s work is one of the best examples of this change,” explains De La Torre.
