GIVING BACK HONORING WOMEN WHO rock! By Stephanie Lesser On her way to success, Emily Zubizarreta faced many challenges as a woman. But through her passion and sheer determination, she built a thriving career in international business and leadership development. To share the lessons she learned and to help other women thrive, she founded Miami Women Who Rock (MWWR), a network of women and businesses that believe in giving back to the community by supporting health-related causes and initiatives. Through monthly “Miami Missions,” MWWR offers members an effective way to give back that works with even the busiest of schedules. Members choose a month and a cause, and commit to become a “Rock Ambassador” for up to 30 days. “Rock Ambassadors” lead fundraising efforts or host an event to benefit their chosen charity. In October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, MWWR will host the “Fifty Shades of Pink” Awards Luncheon. Led by “Rock Ambassador” Sylvie Jordan — an amazing business woman, mother, and breast cancer survivor — the event will raise money for The Women’s Breast Health Initiative (WBHI), Florida Affiliate. The event will also honor 10 wonderful women in the community for their strength, resilience, heart and compassion, and commitment to their families and the Miami community. Artist Jacki Gran will donate an original mosaic to be auctioned at the event, and each honoree will receive an award inspired by the mosaic. A few of the diverse and notable 2014 honorees include Phillis Oeters from Baptist Health, Emily Marquez in the non-profit sector, Irene Korge for philanthropy, and Andrea Ivory for community service as the founder of the WBHI. The Women’s Breast Health Initiative, (WBHI) Florida Affiliate is an outreach organization that believes all women should benefit from the early detection of breast cancer and heart disease. Through their door-to-door outreach campaign, referral program, and annual screening program, the WBHI saves lives by connecting at-risk women with the early detection necessary to fight breast cancer and heart disease.
